Gustav update
I’m in the process of moving all of my websites back to their original state before the storm. You can still view the Gustav blog at http://gustav.controlaltdelete.tv. In the mean time, I haven’t updated both blogs because the power is still out in Baton Rouge, I had to take my sister back to her place, temporary move from a powerless apartment to a power-filled dorm room on the LSU campus (Thank you Adam and Kurt), take videos and photos for this blog and figure out if the items in the frig should be tossed. Plus all had to be done before the 8PM curfew in East Baton Rouge Parish.
I went around campus today with a camera and decided to take photos of the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav around the LSU campus. Damage is pretty extensive; trees uprooted, limbs everywhere, broken glass, street flooding and some areas are still without power. You can view these photos by clicking on ‘Gallery’ in the navigation menu or click here.
I’ll be posting videos on line as well.
Website suspened until furthur notice
With the threat of Gustav, all of the website I operate will be suspended until futhur notice. Starting tomorrow, all the websites will be forwarding to a special blog I will operate during Gustav. From everything I’m hearing, this storm will be worst than Katrina because the center of the storm is expected to make landfall somewhere near Grand Isle, which means New Orleans will be on the worse side of the storm. Some estimates of a 25 - 30 storm surge heading towards the city, including my home in St. Charles parish.
Whatever your political views about rebuilding the city are, keep this in mind. Gustav is heading to an area that has:
- No hurricane protection levees
- Had minimal damage during Katrina and Rita
Please pray for us. This could be the storm that kills a city.
A weekend with Gustav

Well, it’s looking like we’ll dealing with Gustav, no matter where it will be going. The latest models indicate that the storm can make landfall from Corpus Chrisiti, Texas to Mobile, AL. There’s a heavy concentration of the models making landfall from Lafayette, LA to Houma, LA; which means that the Baton Rouge area will feel the effects of the storm (if the models are correct). First of all, this is a week away and can change on a day-to-day basis. If it looks like Gustav will come towards the Baton Rouge, all of my websites will be suspended until furthur notice. Final plans are currently in motion with a final decision to be made on Saturday or Sunday. Stay tuned!
Two new notebooks
I’m made my final decision on two notebooks: Toshiba satellite U400 and HP dv4t. The Toshiba is $979 and the HP is $989. Memory is not an option as my mac has 4GB of memory and i’ll switch the memory of the new notebook and the mac. The Toshiba has an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz, 2GB of memory, 120GB hard drive, 13.3 inch display, Vista Home premium, and weights at 4.5 pounds. The HP has 2.2GHZ, 3GB memory, 250GB hard drive, 14.1 inch display, Vista Home Premium, and weights at 4.8 pounds. Both have 802.11 a/b/g/n and bluetooth. I’m really going towards the HP because it wieghts the same as my mac an I get a bigger display. Best Buy has a display model of the Toshiba at the store in Destin, FL and Baton Rouge, LA and both times I can hear the hard drive spin through the speakers. The model at Circuit City was a little better. Even though I like the HP, the Toshiba has more software to control the computer, like slow down the computer when it’s on a battery. What do you think?
P.S. I just reformat my mac and I didn’t install the blogging software I normally use. So if there’s any mis-spelling of words or inproper grammar, I’m sorry.
On vacation in Florida
It’s been a long summer at LSU and I’m in need of some time away from Louisiana. It was already plan for a 6 day get-away to Navarre Beach, FL, about 30 miles west of Destin, FL. It has been reduced to 3 with a possibility of 4 days because of Tropical Storm Fay. Destin has been the destination for people in New Orleans to go to the beaches. Unfortunately Destin has become a tourist trap; traffic, high-rise condos, crowded beaches. Destin has become Gatlinburg. Navarre Beach is awesome because traffic is not bad and it’s not as crowded as Destin. Navarre Beach does has high-rise condos but it doesn’t bother me as much as it does my parents.
While coming over, it was extremely hard to connect my phone to my MacBook. USBModem supposedly works on OS X, it was a no go. I was able to get PDANet to work on my virtualized Windows XP but was unable to get the connection to be shared with the mac. As much as I love my MacBook, it’s pains me to say that my next notebook (which is looking to be in December and early January), it may not be a Mac.
I have until the end of the year to decide on a new notebook. It’s going to be between a Sony Vaio SR and the MacBook (if the rumors are true and Apple refreshes the notebook line). Even though I like the MacBook, I really miss the two-button mouse. Holding down the alt key and pressing is an inconvenience. Plus, Vista is not that bad. I’ve been using it before the first service pack and I never ran into a problem.
I would like to know what everyone thinks about my preposition. Let me know either in the comments or on the many ways to get in contact with me on the right side of the website (Twitter, FriendFeed, etc.)

Watching the Olympics, thanks GERMANY!
It’s 10:00AM and I’m watching the opening ceremonies, thanks to a link to ARDTV in Germany. Instead of NBC airing the ceremonies live either on a cable network, the NBC network, or online; NBC decided to air the opening ceremonies at prime time. So instead of airing the ceremonies both live and taped delayed, we’re forced to look for proxies to watch live Olympic content in other countries. Way to go, NBC!
Downtime coming
Today, I’m going under the knife to get my wisdom teeth removed. I’m not worried about the surgery. In fact, I’m looking forward to getting my teeth removed because they are starting to hurt. I’ve been told that it takes two to three days to recover, so I’m not going to be online for the next two to three days.
Before I go under the knife, I wanted to get as much done before I lose control of my body. The main item I wanted to get done was the redesign of my high school’s class. Unfortunately, I had some difficulties designing the site so I had to start over from scratch. Here is a screenshot of what the new design will look like.
Sorry I couldn’t get the redesign up before my surgery. I would thank everyone for your prayers and well-wishes. I’ll be back hopefully on Sunday, if not then, then on Monday.
Losing trust
If your following me on Facebook or Twitter, you might have noticed my rage at some of my fellow classmates for not putting some effort into a group project. The end result: I got a 100! Think everything was settled? Not quite.
This afternoon I got a phone from Rick (name has been changed). Rick tells me that he met a person who does PR at a new fitness club in Baton Rouge. He’s not into the gym scene so he gives this person my number. There’s a problem with this problem:
1. I work for the Reveille, the student newspaper for the LSU main campus in Baton Rouge. If this person found out I work for the Reveille, I would be number one on this persons list. I don’t want to be on a PR list, especially since all this gym would use me as a way to get students to join their gym. If Rick gave my number to Apple, I would be showering him with gifts.
2. HE GAVE MY NUMBER TO A COMPLETE STRANGER! How would you feel if your best friend gave your number to a telemarketer? Plus, I don’t know this person, How do I know if this person knows how to trace my number to my present location? It can be done because I’ve done it. Now, a lot of people are like me and know a lot about the dark side of technology but in this day and age, you have to be careful.
During the entire conservation, Rick opened with “Do you trust me?” Anytime he opens with a weird statement like that, it usually ends ugly. So the real question: Do I trust Rick? Not not and it will take a long time to recover from this.
Video: Xo+VoT+.5at^2=this sucks!
This is my first video that I shot on my Sony HDR-SR11. Its a simple movie about three mechanical engineering freshmen college students at LSU who asked me to film them doing homework (Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?). I would have put more of an effort into this film only if Adobe Premiere Elements 4 support AVCHD and didn’t crash on me four times. My next film will be done on Vegas Home Studio, since its a Sony product.
Run Time: 5:33
Rated: PG (for language)
